Go Terps! UM President Keeps Commencement Prayer

The University of Maryland, College Park will retain its tradition of offering a prayer before its commencement exercises, university President C.D. Mote Jr. said Thursday. His decision to maintain the two-minute prayer and moment of silence runs counter to a recommendation this week from the University Senate, which voted 32-14 to stop it. The Senate is composed of students, faculty and staff, and advises Mote on major issues. Senators had said the prayer was noninclusive and not appropriate for a public institution. But in a statement, Mote said, “For many people, a prayer of gratitude and a moment of reflection are an important part of our commencement tradition.” A prayer has been a long-standing part of the university’s graduation; a moment of silence was added in 2007.

A Beautiful Prayer by St. Augustine

I beg of You, my God,

let me know You and love You so that I may be happy in You.

And though I cannot do this fully in this life, yet let me improve from day to day till I may do so to the full.

Let me know You more and more in this life, that I may know You perfectly in heaven.

Let me know You more and more here, so that I may love you perfectly there,

so that my joy may be great in itself here, and complete in heaven with You.

O Truthful God, let me receive the happiness of heaven which You promise so that my joy may be full.

In the meantime,

let my mind think of it,

let my tongue talk of it,

let my heart long for it,

let my mouth speak of it,

let my soul hunger after it,

let my flesh thirst after it,

let my whole being desire it,

until such time as I may enter through death into the joy of my Lord,
there to continue forever, world without end.

Amen.

Prayer for My Buddies

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and protection. You guard us always and defend us, for we have no hope apart from Your grace.

I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and buddies. Show them a new revelation of Your love and power.

I ask You to minister to their spirit at this very moment.

Where there is pain, give them Your peace and mercy.

Where there is self-doubt, release a renewed confidence through Your grace.

Bless their homes, family, finances, their goings and their comings.

In the name of Your Son, and our Savior, Jesus Christ,

Amen.

Morning Prayer

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.~~ Psalm 5:1-3

Heavenly Father, as I face this new day, I thank You for the work you have done for me as I slept.

I give thanks, that You never sleep;

I give thanks, that Your loving care is with me when I am least aware;

I give thanks, that You renew, refresh and revitalize me.

I pray that I always and actively seek Your will and Your plans for my life.

I lay my hopes and my fears at Your feet, watching for Your miraculous touch.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen.

Prayer For Internet and Computer Time

Dear God, my Heavenly Father, my Shield, my Protector, my Fortress.

I ask You to fortify me with the grace of Your Holy Spirit while I dwell in the web of wires and connections, that is the internet.

Direct my hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to You.

Help me to treat with love, charity and patience all those whom I encounter.

Make my computer more than a machine, render it:

  • A tool of growth, learning and spiritual development,
  • An altar for thanksgiving and blessing,
  • A conduit for faith and fellowship.

In the name of Jesus, I pray,

Amen.

Today’s Morning Prayer: A Heart Free From Pride

humility.jpg

My heart is not proud, O LORD,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.But I have stilled and quieted my soul;
like a weaned child with its mother,
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both now and forevermore.
~~ Psalm 131

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
~~ James 4:6

“Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance. ”
~~Saint Augustine

I give thanks to You, heavenly Father, for protecting me through the night and granting me another day. I ask You to fortify me with the grace of Your Holy Spirit, and give Your peace to my soul, that I may be free from all needless anxiety and worry. Help me to desire always that which is pleasing and acceptable to You, so that Your will may be my will.

Today, make known to me, and take from my heart, every kind, form and degree of pride.

Today, empty me of self, and awaken in me the deepest depth and truth of that humility which can make me capable of your revealing light.

Today, do not allow attribution to me, for the good that you perform in me and through me, but rather, that all honor be to you.

Today, may your presence in me, and your work through me, testify of your holiness and saving grace.

Help me to die to self each day, and continuously seek your glorification in all that I think or do.

This I ask in the name of Jesus Christ, the exemplar of humility.

Amen.
