Say a Little Prayer: Religious People Less Anxious

Research from the University of Toronto found that those who believe in God have less anxiety and stress than those who are not as religious.

To test the theory, the university’s assistant professor of psychology Michael Inzlicht conducted two studies in which he hooked participants up to electrodes to test their brain activity.

The result indicated believers and non-believers have significant differences in their brains.

According to Inzlicht, the religious participants had a lot less activity going on in the portion of the brain that signals when attention or control is needed because a person is producing anxiety.

“You could think of this part of the brain like a cortical alarm bell that rings when an individual has just made a mistake or experiences uncertainty,” Inzlicht said, who teaches and conducts research at the University of Toronto Scarborough. “We found that religious people or even people who simply believe in the existence of God show significantly less brain activity in relation to their own errors. They’re much less anxious and feel less stressed when they have made an error.”

Inzlicht’s report appears online in the journal Psychological Science.

Prayer for Bangladesh

ph2007111501054.jpg

Heavenly Father, who in Your great love and compassion hears the prayers of all Your people and is ever-present with those who walk in the shadow of death. I offer my prayers for all who suffer loss and devastation due to the Bangladesh cyclone disaster.

Grant peace and happiness, for those who have died.
Heal those who are injured.
Comfort those who mourn.
Give hope to those whose hope has been taken away.

Unite the local communities together in love and prayer.
Help them care well for each one another.

Strengthen the will of the world community to pray and generously give help and aid.
Inspire us to show compassion and caring in practical and abundant ways.

Bless the earth.
Bring peace and harmony to the lands, to the sky and to the waters.
Let the earth be calm.

For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who suffered and died for the life of the world.

Amen.

A Prayer For Southern California

A Prayer For Southern California

Heavenly Father, I turn away from my own problems and come to You for those whose homes have been darkened by disaster in recent days.

There are so many who are injured, bereaved, and homeless. Bewildered and fearful, their faith has been shaken by this tragedy. Most merciful God, wrap your arms of grace around them, until they know they are safely held in your embrace. Assure them You are with them in their suffering and sorrow. From You alone can come the spirit that will lift them above their darkness and enable them to return to a life of purpose, hope, and peace.

Please bless those who are working for their relief: risking their lives to help, to heal, and to comfort. I pray, that You will fill my heart with the same compassion, and give me eyes to see how I might, even from a distance, share in their task and be a part of the healing.

I ask this as a faithful servant of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
