How to Spend Thirty Minutes with God

Rachael Ray promises that her dazzling dishes will never take more than 30 minutes to make, while the exercise DVDs guarantee an effective workout, in that same half of an hour.

This post encourages you to allocate 30 minutes to get “bread for the soul”, with a “spiritual workout” that will strengthen every area of your life.

How to Spend Thirty Minutes with God

(5 minutes)

Spend a few minutes quieting yourself and relaxing, settling into a comfortable, prayerful position. As you begin, ask God to grant you openness, generosity and courage during your time together.

Gracious God, open my heart so that I can hear your Word . . . your Word of Great Possibility and Wonder.
Gracious God, help me to be generous in spirit so that in silence I may be able to embrace your Word of Possibility and Wonder.
Gracious God, grant me a courageous heart to open myself to your Word of Possibility and Wonder.

(5 minutes)

I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
~~Psalm 9:2

Tell God how great, wonderful and amazing He is. Let Him know all the ways that you see Him as God. Take 1 minute with the scripture, 1 minute to make a list and 3 minutes to express.

(5 minutes)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
~~1 John 1:9

Admit that you’ve done some things wrong and ask God to forgive you. Tell Him how bad it made you feel when you did the wrong thing. Let Him know why you know what you did is wrong. Take 1 minute with the scripture, 1 minute to gather your thoughts and 3 minutes to express.

(5 minutes)

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
~~1 Thessalonians 5:18

Just start thanking God for all the things you can think of. There is nothing too big or too small to thank Him for. Take 1 minute with the scripture, 1 minute to make a list and 3 minutes to give thanks.

(5 minutes)

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
~~Ephesians 6:18

This is where you ask God to help you. To increase your faith, to help you in your prayer life, to be more giving or whatever is on your heart.

(5 minutes)

End your time with God by listening. Sit quietly before the Lord and let Him speak to you.

Thirty minutes well spent. In the time it takes to watch a Seinfeld rerun or 1/6 of a football game, we have been filled and energized with the Spirit.

Mini Manna: By Grace Through Living Faith

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
~~ Ephesians 2:8-9

You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
~~ James 2:24

Are these two passages contradictory?

The two passages are not really in conflict, because James and Paul were each talking about two different kinds of works and emphasizing different aspects of salvation.

Paul emphasized that the grace of God saves, and man cannot earn his salvation by merit. The fact that God’s grace saves, does not relieve us of the responsibility to obey God in order to receive the benefits of that grace.

We are saved by many things:

  • “For in this hope we were saved” (Romans 8:24).
  • “…he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” (Hebrews 5:9)
  • “… the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
  • “and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also…” (1 Peter 3:21).

All of these save because salvation is “by grace through faith” . That faith is a Living Faith.

A living faith is a faith that works, that obeys the commands of Christ. When we let God’s love flow around us, cover us and support us it leads us to a living faith. A living faith manifested through the “fruit of the spirit“: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

A Prayer for My Wife

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
~~ Ephesians 5:25-33

Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
~~ Colossians 3:19

In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
~~ 1 Corinthians 11:11

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
~~ 1 Peter 3:7

Heavenly Father, help me to love my wife, Raquel, sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her:

— May I never be harsh toward her but instead honor and cherish her.
— May I always remember that I am not independent of her.
— Help me to understand and fulfill her needs.
— Inspire me to draw on her wisdom and strength.
— Lead me to treat her with tenderness and humility.
— Let me display an unselfish spirit at all times.

Faithful Father, strengthen Raquel and bless her daily with the joy of Your presence:

— Keep her safe by surrounding her with Your hedge of protection.
— Keep her clothed in Your armor and prepare her for each day’s battle.
— Give her the wisdom to perform on her job and be a witness for You.

Lord, I thank You so much for all that my wife does for me, and our family. Thank You for blessing me with such a wonderful companion, helpmate, and best friend.

In the name of Your Son, and our Savior, Jesus Christ,

Praying for the Children: Prayerfulness

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
~~ Ephesians 6:18

Grant, Lord, that my children’s lives may be marked by prayerfulness, that they may learn to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests”

I pray that they embrace Your gift of prayer. Your gift to the strong and the weak, to the smallest child and frailest of the old. I pray they do not suffer the tragedy to go through life leaving the gift of prayer unused!

I pray that they experience intimacy with You. May they recognize that though You are all-sufficient, all-powerful, and all-knowing, You desire to draw close, to communicate, to speak to them, to seek their response, to hear their prayers.

Help their mother and I to nurture prayer warriors, strong soldiers for the Lord, for we need the children to pray.

I ask these things in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ.
